The "CR170" turbo, also known as the "Stage 3 Turbo" in various internet forums, comes as standard equipment on the 170 hp European-spec common rail Mk6 Golf, Jetta, and Beetle. For the US-market CR140 CBEA and CJAA engines, it's a meaningful upgrade: a better-breathing turbine wheel and larger compressor inducer improve airflow, which brings higher power and torque along with lower EGTs.
In factory Borg Warner trim, this is part number 53039880207 (VW part 03L253056C), listed for the overseas DPF-equipped 170 hp engine. Running it in a US CR140 car as it comes in the box would require expensive, illegal exhaust components and special ECU changes, which is why it's never been listed as fitting any US-market car. Until now.
The Kerma KS3 ("Kerma Stage 3") is the first upgrade turbo built for US-market CR140 cars that's fully compatible with the factory setup. It retains all factory emissions controls and installs with 100% factory piping, no exhaust changes, no ECU workarounds. Our custom version uses a new aero billet compressor wheel configured specifically for CBEA and CJAA applications.
It will even run correctly on the original factory ECU programming with zero issues, making it a viable replacement for the stock turbo on its own. To get the full benefit, a Kerma ECU tune is recommended.
