Description

Why you need this when you upgrade your turbo

The factory MAP sensor on most ALH, BEW, and BRM TDIs reads up to 2.5 bar absolute (about 22 to 23 psi on a boost gauge). Once you subtract the ECU's control margin and overboost protection threshold, that sensor actually limits your real-world boost to around 16 to 17 psi if you want to keep the factory safety systems intact. An upgraded turbo can easily exceed that. Without a 3-bar sensor, your ECU has no way to see or manage boost above the stock sensor's range, so you're still capped at stock turbo performance no matter what turbo is bolted on.

The 3-bar sensor is stock equipment on Touareg and Passat TDIs, which is why it has more headroom. Swapping it onto an ALH, BEW, or BRM gives your ECU the range it needs to safely control a bigger turbo.

Important: you must tell your tuner you're installing a 3-bar sensor. Without a matching tuning adjustment, boost pressure can climb to turbo-damaging levels.

Fitment note: on ALH-engined cars, installation requires fabricating an adapter grommet or gasket (4mm rubber works well). We also offer a billet aluminum adapter made specifically for this swap. Not compatible with A3/B4 chassis cars, which use a MAP sensor built into the ECU rather than a standalone sensor.

The short version: if you're running an upgraded turbo and still have the factory 2.5-bar sensor, your ECU cannot see or control boost above stock levels. This sensor removes that ceiling.
