The Garrett VNT17 is a direct-fit turbocharger upgrade for the VW TDI BEW engine (Mk4 Golf, Jetta, Jetta Wagon, New Beetle, 2004-2006). It replaces the factory KP39 turbo and is the BEW-spec version of the European PD150 turbo.
Why replace the stock KP39? The KP39 has two documented failure points: its actuator fails over time, and the "Smart Actuator" that controls it is difficult to source as a standalone replacement part. The KP39 also limits power output once a BEW is tuned beyond stock. The VNT17 addresses both — it's proven more reliable in service, and supports 150+ whp with supporting modifications (nozzles, tuning, injector calibration).
Is this a plug-and-play install? Yes, with the parts included in this kit. The VNT17 ships with a Smart Actuator pre-installed. It also pairs with Kerma's EGR pipe, a replacement cooler pipe that connects to the exhaust manifold — this lets you install the VNT17 (or a 1722, 1726, or Borg Warner S7 turbo) without modifying the stock EGR cooler pipe. Add the EGR pipe at checkout for a complete plug-and-play swap.
Does the turbo need to be re-clocked? Depending on your plumbing configuration, yes. The re-clocking procedure is documented in Kerma's VNT17 re-clocking guide. The guide is written for the ALH engine but applies to the BEW as well — the only difference is the BEW doesn't need the adapter, since its stock hose runs directly to the intercooler.
What else is recommended with this turbo? Kerma recommends adding the stainless braided oil supply line. The factory oil line is rigid and prone to cracking or kinking during removal — the braided line simplifies installation and reduces the risk of a failure point right after the swap.
If my current KP39 just needs a new actuator: Kerma stocks the Smart Actuator separately for owners who don't need a full turbo replacement.
