Description

What It Is
A set of forged H-beam connecting rods built as an upgrade for the 90hp, 110hp, and PD100/PD105/PD115 1.9L 8v TDI engines. This kit includes the con rods and the ARP bolt kit needed to install them, genuine FCP Engineering parts, shot peened and heat treated for strength.

Why Upgrade the Rods
The stock rods are a common weak point once you start pushing more power or torque through a 1.9 TDI. These rods are two-piece forged from 40CrNiMo steel and profiled specifically so no block grinding is needed for clearance, unlike some aftermarket rods that require machine work to fit.

Also Works for a 2.0L Bore Job
If you're boring a 1.9L 8v block out to 2.0L capacity, these rods are compatible with 2.0 BHW pistons, so the same rod set covers both a stock-displacement rebuild and a bore-and-stroke build.

Specifications

  • 144mm center to center
  • 26mm tapered small end
  • 50.6mm big end
  • Compatible with stock pistons or 2.0L pistons in the 1.9L block
  • ARP 2000 5/16" bolts included
  • 575 grams per rod with bolts, +/- 1 gram tolerance

Installation Notes

  • An imperial 3/8" 12-point socket is recommended for install
  • Pin fit should be checked by a qualified machine shop, since these rods are machined to the lowest small-end tolerance
  • Measuring bolt stretch is recommended over torque alone: target 0.0055 to 0.0060 inches (0.14 to 0.15mm) of stretch
  • Recommended torque with ARP lube is 32 ft-lbs (43 Nm)
  • Full installation instructions are included as a downloadable PDF

Fitment
1996-2006 Volkswagen Golf, Jetta, Jetta Wagon, New Beetle, and Passat with the 1.9L 8v TDI engine, covering AHU, 1Z, ALH, and BRM engine codes.

Common Questions

Will these fit if I'm boring my 1.9 to 2.0L?
Yes. These rods work with 2.0 BHW pistons, so they support both a stock-displacement 1.9 rebuild and a bored-out 2.0L build.

Do I need to modify my block to fit these rods?
No. They're profiled specifically to avoid the block grinding some other aftermarket rods require.

What's included in the kit?
The set of 4 H-beam connecting rods and the ARP 2000 bolt kit. Installation instructions are included as a PDF.

Should I use a torque wrench or measure bolt stretch?
FCP Engineering recommends measuring bolt stretch (0.0055 to 0.0060 inches) over relying on torque value alone, though the torque spec of 32 ft-lbs with ARP lube is provided as well.

Do I need a machine shop for this install?
For the pin fit specifically, yes. These rods are machined to the lowest small-end tolerance, so a machine shop should verify pin fit before final assembly.
