Description

What it is
The Series 7 (S7) is a Borg Warner turbocharger, sold new (not rebuilt), that KermaTDI modifies and clocks for the VW 1.9L ALH and BEW TDI engines. It is not interchangeable with other Borg Warner turbos sharing similar part numbers — third-party units with matching numbers will not perform the same, because the modification and tuning calibration are Kerma-specific.

Performance figures

  • Spool-up: 300–400 RPM faster than a Garrett VNT17
  • Supports 156whp / 320+ ft-lb on Kerma's 150hp kit (dyno-verified, Diesel Power Magazine)
  • Rated up to 180whp with appropriate supporting mods
  • No core deposit required

Fitment

Engine Years Notes
ALH (Golf, Jetta, New Beetle) 1999–2003 Needs a compressor-outlet adapter for SMIC plumbing
BEW (Golf, Jetta, Jetta Wagon, New Beetle) 2004–2006 Needs a lower EGR pipe; requires reclocking and updated tuning

What's required for a complete install

ALH:

  • Compressor outlet adapter (KermaTDI offers 1.25", 1.75", or 2" OD — 1.25" ships standard for stock hose; 1.75" for KermaTDI's upgraded SMIC plumbing kit; 2" for KermaTDI's upgraded FMIC plumbing)
  • Cars built before mid-2001 additionally need an updated turbo support bracket, oil return line, and oil return line block fitting (KermaTDI sells a retrofit kit for this). Cars built after mid-2001 are a direct install.

BEW:

  • Lower EGR pipe (stock pipe is too short)
  • Reclocking of the turbo housing to match stock BEW plumbing
  • Updated ECU tuning, required to prevent a check engine light caused by a missing actuator sensor signal

Recommended for both:

  • Stainless steel braided oil supply line (the stock rigid line is prone to breaking during R&R)

What's included
Turbo Install Kit (gasket kit, $48 value) at no added cost. No core charge.

Common questions

Can I use a Borg Warner Series 7 turbo from another supplier with Kerma's tuning? Not recommended — Kerma modifies and clocks this specific unit, and other Borg Warner turbos with similar part numbers won't perform the same even if the part number looks equivalent.

Does the ALH version need any additional parts to fit? Yes — a compressor outlet adapter for SMIC plumbing. Cars built before mid-2001 also need an updated support bracket, oil return line, and block fitting.

Does the BEW version bolt on directly? No — it requires a lower EGR pipe, reclocking, and updated tuning to avoid a check-engine light.

Is this turbo rebuilt or new? New from Borg Warner, not rebuilt.

How much faster does it spool than the stock VNT17? 300–400 RPM sooner.
