Rear Main Seal with Installation Sleeve for Mk4 and B5.5 VW

What It Is
A PTFE-style rear main seal (crankshaft seal) for Mk4 and B5.5 VW models, sold with the installation sleeve included.

Installation Notes

• Remove the oil pan first to ensure a proper seal between the bottom of the seal carrier and the pan
• You'll need to remove the transmission, clutch, and flywheel (or flex plate and torque converter on automatics) to access it
• Install on a clean, dry crankshaft, using brake cleaner to clean the surface beforehand
• No sealant is needed between the seal carrier and the block. The carrier has an integral rubber seal that handles that on its own
• Center the included white plastic seal retainer on the crankshaft's protruding end, then press the seal carrier evenly onto the crank until it stops. Dowels locate the carrier in place

Do I need to remove the transmission to replace this seal?
Yes. You'll need to remove the transmission along with the clutch and flywheel, or the flex plate and torque converter on an automatic.

Do I need sealant to install the carrier?
No. The carrier has an integral rubber seal, so no additional sealant is needed between it and the block.

Is the installation sleeve included?
Yes, the seal ships with its installation sleeve to keep it round during install.

Is this a good time to replace the seal if I'm already doing a clutch job?
